Hammock Sizes

Mexican hammocks come in 5 sizes and are sold accordingly. In terms of length (lying area approx. 2m, total length approx. 4m, minimum distance between hanging points approx. 3.40m), hammocks do not differ, only in width and the number of threads. Since hammocks are usually used diagonally or transversely, only the width is relevant. Generally, the larger the hammock, the more comfortable and spacious it is.

As these hammocks are handcrafted, the transitions between sizes are subtle, and the individual hammocks differ slightly from each other. I was surprised to learn that sellers differentiate sizes based on weight. The following sizes are usually available:

  • Individual
  • Doble
  • Matrimonial
  • Familiar
  • Gigante

Below are images comparing the two sizes I offer, Matrimonial and Familiar:

Here is a brief overview of the common sizes and how to recognize them:

Individual

The smallest hammock. Other names include: Single, #3, MEXI1. It weighs approximately 700-800g.

This hammock is intended for a Mexican and is the most affordable option. Since Europeans are generally taller than Mexicans, I consider it only suitable for Europeans to a certain extent and therefore do not offer it.

Doble

The next larger hammock. Other names include: Double, #4, MEXI2. It weighs approximately 900-1100g.

This hammock is meant for two Mexican individuals. It is sufficiently spacious for a European. However, lying completely transversely in it is difficult. This hammock is adequate, but it lacks that real "wow" factor. Therefore, I do not offer it and always recommend at least purchasing the Matrimonial size.

Matrimonial

This medium size is already quite large. Other names include: Queen, #5, or MEXI3; we also refer to this hammock as Maya3. It weighs approximately 1200-1450g. Note: Hammocks of the size 'Matrimonial' are often mistakenly sold as family hammocks or family hammocks (family or especially those at the upper weight range are also sold as MEXI4). In case of doubt, always pay attention to the weight when making comparisons.

Literally translated, matrimonial means 'conjugal' or 'for couples' and is suitable for a Mexican couple with a child. This hammock offers more than enough space for one person; even two Europeans can comfortably use it. Lying completely transversely is possible.

Familiar

Other names include: King, family, #6, MEXI4, or family hammock; we also refer to this hammock as Maya4. It weighs approximately 1500-1750g. Note: These hammocks are sometimes also sold as MEXI5. In case of doubt, always pay attention to the weight when making comparisons.

This huge hammock is intended for the entire Mexican family with multiple children and is the largest hammock in my selection. It offers more than enough space for one person; even two Europeans can comfortably use it, and possibly even three (although I personally have not tried the latter).

Gigante

As the name suggests, this is a gigantic hammock. Other names include Jumbo, #7, or MEXI5. It weighs approximately 2kg or more. Note: Sometimes hammocks of the smaller size 'Familiar' are mistakenly sold as MEXI5. In case of doubt, always pay attention to the weight when making comparisons.

Since larger hammocks are more elaborate to produce and, due to their higher weight, more expensive in terms of shipping costs, a 'Gigante' hammock would be significantly more expensive than the 'Familiar' size, which I believe is already sufficient for any purpose. Therefore, I do not offer hammocks of the 'Gigante' size. If you are interested, feel free to contact me, and I can include a hammock of this size in my next order from Mexico. However, the delivery time can be quite long, as I only order new stock from Mexico once a year at most.
